You're Not Too Old to Lift. Britain's Over-50s Are Proving It.

Women over 50 strength training together at Mindset Body Transformations in Southampton

Have you noticed it too?

Right now, all over Britain, women are quietly typing the same sort of thing into Google. "Liz Earle strength training tips." "Felicity Kendal strength training." A much-loved actress in her late 70s picking up weights… and half the country wanting to know how she did it.

Something has shifted. And I love it.

Our generation was raised to shrink ourselves. Do more aerobics. Eat a bit less. Take up less room. And now here we are, watching women in their 70s and 80s get stronger and more capable than they've been in years… and thinking, quietly, "well, maybe I could too."

You can. That's the whole point of this. I've spent the last 7 years helping women over 30 here in Southampton discover exactly that. So let me talk you through it, the way I would if you were sat across from me with a cup of tea.

The story we were told

I want to name the little voice first. Because I hear it in almost every woman who walks through our doors.

"That's not for women my age."

"I'll only hurt myself."

"I don't want to bulk up and look manly."

"It's too late for me now."

"Gyms are for the young ones, aren't they?"

If any of those landed, I want you to know something. You're not being silly, and you're not being lazy. You were taught that.

We came up in the era of the aerobics video and the calorie-counting magazine. Cardio and eating less. That was the whole message, drummed in for decades. Nobody sat our generation down and said, "actually, the best thing you can do for your body as you get older is pick something heavy up and put it down again."

So of course lifting weights feels like it belongs to somebody else. Younger women. Fitter women. Men in vests grunting in the corner.

But that story is out of date. And I'd love to gently take it apart with you.

Why it matters more now, not less

Here's the honest bit of science, and I'll keep it simple, because it genuinely matters.

From around 50, and especially through menopause, we start losing muscle faster than we build it. If nothing challenges those muscles, the body quietly lets them go. It's the old "use it or lose it" thing, and it's very real.

And muscle isn't just about looking toned. Muscle is what keeps you strong enough to carry the shopping. It's what protects your bones at exactly the age they start to thin. It's your balance, so a trip doesn't become a fall. It's a steadier metabolism. And it's the single biggest thing standing between you and losing your independence in your 70s and 80s.

Read that last line again, because it's the one that matters most. This was never really about a dress size. It's about being the woman who still gets herself up off the floor, still carries her own bags, still gets down to play with the grandchildren and back up again without a second thought.

Strength training is the one thing that reverses muscle loss. And it works at any age. In your 50s, your 60s, your 70s… even your 80s.

That's not wishful thinking. That's exactly why those searches are surging. Women are seeing the living proof: an actress in her late 70s who took up weight training and got visibly stronger and more capable for it. If she can start then, the "I've left it too late" story rather falls apart, doesn't it?

If you're also noticing all the talk about protein and creatine for midlife women, that's part of the same shift. I've written honestly about protein and creatine for women over 40 if you'd like to understand what's hype and what's real. And if the weight has crept on around your middle, my piece on menopause weight gain explains what's going on there.

The myths, busted kindly

Let me answer the ones I hear every single week. No lecture. Just the truth.

"I'll bulk up." You won't. I promise. Building big, bulky muscle is genuinely hard and slow, even for young men trying their hardest at it. As a woman over 50, what you'll actually build is leaner, stronger, more toned, and far more capable. Not bigger. Better.

"It's too late for me." It isn't. Your body responds to training at any age. Muscles don't check your birth certificate before they get stronger. Women starting in their 60s and 70s get real, measurable results. The best time was 20 years ago. The second best time is this week.

"Weights means a barbell and a room full of blokes." It really doesn't. "Weights" can mean your own bodyweight, a pair of light dumbbells, a kettlebell, a resistance band. It means gently challenging your muscles in a way that suits you, today, as you are.

"I need to get fit first." No. You get fit by starting, not before you start. Nobody walks in already knowing what they're doing. You begin where you are, and it builds from there. That's the whole job.

If you'd like the proper step-by-step version of how to begin, I've written a beginner's guide to strength training that walks you through it kindly.

The real barrier (it was never the weights)

Now, here's the honest turn. The part nobody says out loud.

For most of the women I meet, the hard part was never the weights.

It was walking into a big, intimidating gym on your own. Not having a clue what to do with any of the machines. Feeling like everyone's watching you. Feeling like the oldest person in the room. Doing the whole thing alone, with nobody in your corner.

That's the real block. Not the lifting. The loneliness and the fear around it.

And I understand it completely, because I built my whole studio around fixing exactly that. You shouldn't have to be brave just to start looking after yourself.

You don't have to do it alone

So here's the answer, and it's a simple one. You don't do it on your own.

Small-group training. Women only. Over-30s. Coached every step of the way, in small groups of women just like you… women your age, at your stage, learning right beside you.

No blokes grunting in the corner. No machines you don't understand. No feeling watched. Just a warm room, a coach who knows your name, and a group of women who get it, because they were nervous on their first day too.

That's exactly why I built Mindset. And it's why our small-group classes and our menopause and midlife training here in Southampton are full of women in their 50s and 60s who now genuinely look forward to training. I don't say that lightly. We're rated 5.0 from 121 Google reviews, and we've helped over 500 women transform how they look and, more importantly, how they feel.

Take Vanessa. Busy mum, runs her own business, no spare time going. She didn't live in the gym or give up the foods she loves. She just turned up, week after week, in a room where she felt she belonged… and now she back-squats 70kg. She'll tell you the confidence matters more than the number on the bar.

That's what's on offer here. Not a punishment. Not a shrinking exercise. A room where you finally belong, and a body that gets stronger, steadier and more capable every single week.

Because honestly? The hardest part was never the training. It's making that first decision to do something different. Do that, and the rest follows. 💜

Come and try it. Properly.

Start with a completely free 7-day trial. No contracts. No pressure. No awkward sales pitch. Just 7 days to meet the coaches, get to know the ladies, and feel for yourself what makes this place different.
